Red Butterfly by Dacheng

There were once three little butterfly brothers, a white one, a red one, and a yellow one. They played together under the sunshine, and danced among the flowers of the garden, and they never grew tired because they were so happy.

One day it was a heavy rain. The sky is as dark as the night. And their winds were wet. They powerlessly flew back to home. But when they got there, they found the door was locked and the key had lost. So they had to stay out of doors in the rain, and they grew wetter and wetter. They know that is dangerous, their winds got heavier and heavier. They could hardly fly.

By and by they flew to the red and yellow striped tulip, and said, "Tulip, our friend, you will open your flower-cup and let us in till the storm is over, will you?" Our butterflies were shaking under the rain.

The tulip answered, "The yellow butterfly may enter, because he is in the same color as me, but the white and the red one may not come in. they look so strange.”
But yellow butterflies said loudly in the rain, "If my red and white brothers may not find shelter in your flower-cup. Then, I'll stay outside in the rain with them.''

It was a terrible day. The rain got harder and harder, and the poor little butterflies grew so miserable under the heavy rain, so they flew to the white lily and said, "Good Lily, will you open your bud a little so that we can be inside? The rain is so heavy. Please.''

The lily answered stingily: "The white butterfly may come in, because he is like me, but the red and yellow ones must stay outside in the storm.''

Then the little white butterfly said, "If you won't receive my red and yellow brothers in your bud, why, then, I'll stay out in the rain with them. We would rather be wet than be parted.'' So the three little butterflies flew away.

Certainly, the yellow butterfly could be in the tulip. And the white one could be in the lily. But, not only in the garden, even the whole world, there was no red flower by that time, which means the red butterfly would not be receive anywhere.

“Before ensuring you are saving, we won’t hide in the flowers.” Said the yellow and white butterflies.

The weather is really terrible. Our butterflies could not take any more. The yellow and white butterflies were shaking in the winds and rain. They were as miserable as a leaf in the sea. But they did not know that their red brother had made a decision to save them from the danger.
“My brothers,” the red butterfly shouted to his brothers, “we can hardly survive in the rain. I will try my best to make you to be save!”

The yellow and white one was almost dizzy in the rain. They did not know how much their brother would put off to them. Stiffly, they turned back their body, and saw their brother was abnormally standing on the earth, suffering in the rain, and shaking in the wind. But they were confused what was going to happen.

The miracle was happening. The body of red butterfly became the limb of a kind of flower. His wings were closing together to be a flower-cup. Of course it was in red, the first red flower in the world. Amazingly, the red butterfly had transformed to be the first red flower under the sky. Now we should call him the rose

Instantly, the yellow and the blue butterflies came into the flower-cup of the rose.

“Sorry, my brothers,” said the rose, “I can no longer play with you. But it is my only way to protect you from the danger.”

What could the butterflies talk about? They kissed on the petals of their brother, for his true love, and hugged together in the flower-cup, where is the only safe place for them.

After the rain, the little prince, the owner of the garden came out of his house. He saw the rose which was standing there and realized what miracle does mean.

The flower in red could not exist without love.

Volcano Dance by Fangxiong

The hot air boiled her blood.

She was falling. The lava in the large magma chamber inside the volcano greeted her with open arms. The second she fell into the pool of deadly lava, she evaporated instantly. Her soul turned into streams of light with colours of the rainbow. The rays shot directly to the sky high above, and beyond.

With a gasp, Sparkly woke up. She knew it was not real. But it would be soon.

The earth was trembling. She sighed, staring her reflection in the mirror which was placed on the stone-made night table. She was a very beautiful girl, with big black eyes, rosy cheeks, red lips and a well-shaped body. The ground roared and shook again, more furiously this time. Small pieces of stones were starting to shear off the stone ceiling.

Suddenly, a stone hit the mirror and smashed it into pieces instantly. Sparkly buried her face in her arms and cried, for the shattered glass pieces, and for herself too.

She belongs to Volcano Tribe, a clan created by Volcano God thousand of years ago. The people of Volcano Tribe lived inside the volcano. The Volcano God cast strong spells at the edge of the caves to separate them from the pipes, which linked directly to the large magma chamber that contained the lava. Thus, they were protected from the deadly lava. However, when the volcano erupted each time, a girl of the Volcano Tribe must step out of the cave and dive into the pipe, sacrificing herself in order to prevent the spells from weakening. This time, Sparkly was the chosen one.

A warm hand gently rested on her shoulder. Sparkly looked up and saw Vesuvius, her beloved boyfriend.

“Are you afraid, love?” Vesuvius asked her. There was warmth in his voice, love in his eyes.

“I guess.” Sparkly said. Her voice was still trembling, from the intensity of the ground movements.

“Listen, my dear,” Vesuvius said softly, “I really enjoy the days with you. I treasure every minute and every second with you.”

“But I don’t want to leave you!” Sparkly cried in anguish.

“Me too. I want to die with you but…” Vesuvius said painfully.

“But you can’t,” Sparkly interrupted him, “It’ll break the rule.”

She kissed him with deep sorrow, “I’ll sacrifice myself for the clan. I am the one. You must promise me not to live in sorrow after tonight. Live your life for me, happily.” She turned her back to Vesuvius and towards her fate.

One hour later, it was time. The main cave was filled with the volcano people, standing silently. Vesuvius was one of them. They were all bare-footed, dressed in red robes, and their faces were streaked with red pigment from the rough earth. Their facial expressions were serious, and a bit sad. They held bright torches, moist eyes flickering in the dancing flames. The torch light lit up the whole cave and cast wavy shadows on to the walls.

Sparkly entered the cave. To everyone’s amazement, she was smiling. She was more beautiful than ever. Her eyes reflected the glow from the lights. It was as if a fire was burning within her. She was dressed in a bright and red dress. It was the colour of blood, the colour of fire, the colour of the setting sun. She was holding a red flower in her mouth. A few meters away, Vesuvius could see pride and courage in her eyes.

Sparkly started to move her arms and dance slowly in delight. At the same time, the crowd swayed the torches and began to chant. She was such a professional dancer that she had captivated every volcano people. Every motion of hers was graceful and beautiful. She looked like a wonderful swan when she stretched both of her arms and spin; she was as if a beautiful peacock when she held up her arms, hands sliding through the air; she could be likened as a magical phoenix as she jumped through the air, the waterfall-like black long hair swaying in the warm glowing light. Soon she picked up her speed. She danced so fast that she looked like a burning flame in the eyes of the audience. The chanting grew in intensity as they celebrated the life in Sparkly.

At last, she reached the other end of the cave, which was connected to the pipe. She did not stop dancing during the whole process.

She could feel the hot air rushing in from the pipe outside the cave and started sweating. She felt dizzy and tried to steady herself when the dance came to the end. The crowd stopped chanting exactly at the same time and fell into a solemn silence. Only the crackles of the flames could be heard. Sparkly’s eyes scanned through the crowd and formed with Vesuvius’ eyes. There was no fear in her eyes but calm.

The nightmare flashed into her mind again. Sparkly took a deep breath, opened her arms as if hugging the air, and exclaimed triumphantly.

“Even in the death, may we be together forever!”

Lively sparks spewed from the molten hot sea of red death.

Red Alert by Huang Wei

Do you believe that evil people can escape and righteous men can be killed at the end? It seems that justice will not always beat prevail!

An evil man had a lot of underlings, he did everything he wanted. Kill people, trade drugs and weapons. The evil man was Bob. He was not afraid of the police and the law. Instead, many policemen were terrified of Bob.

When 12 o'clock struck at the night, the world was Bob's. Nobody could stop him from doing whatever he liked. His underlings tyrannized the citizens, beating them up. But Bob did not do this kind of thing. He was the instigator behind the curtain. Once he killed a person, and there was someone came out and took the blame for him. Bob give the person a lot of money and help to take care of his family until the man got out of prison.

Even though many people knew that Bob was really a bad man, and even the police were aware, but they had no evidences. So they could do nothing thing to stop Bob. Everyone was afraid of Bob and everyone wanted to send Bob to prison, especially the police chief. He had targeted Bob for over eight years. He hated Bob not only because he was truly an evil man but also because that Bob had killed his good working partner. His partner was a planted agent. The head had promised that he would not die in vain. He was thinking about how to get evidences of Bob's criminal act every moment!

One day, the police received very strong evidence to charge
Bob for murder. There were reliable testimonies of a witness and material evidences. The witness was being driven to the courthouse, and policemen went together to protect him.

A driver, a witness and three policemen including the police chief were in a red car, they were on their way to the courthouse. The witness was a very important person in which he could provide evidences to help the police send the much dreaded Bob to prison. He was thin, and he looked really anxious. He was afraid of being killed after he had provided evidences to send Bob to prison by Bob's friends.

The police chief said, "when you get to the courthouse, you should say to the judge and the public that you saw Bob was killing the victim and describe what you saw at that time."

"Yes, I know that." the witness answered and used a piece of tissue wiped the little sweat beads of sweat on his forehead.

"You just need to say what you have said to us, no words are to be changed. Are you clear?" the policeman stressed loudly. It was not because of he hate the witness but because that he disliked Bob a lot.

"I am clear." The witness replied without any confidence.

The red car was moving not fast in order to make sure the witness was safe. Cars on the road passed the red car till they disappeared at the cross junction ahead. The car was slowly moving close to a cross. The car was moving towards the junction and slowed down for safety checks. But nothing could warn them of what was going to happen.

Because of the lack of witness’s testimony, and the material evidences were not strong enough, finally, Bob was proclaimed innocent. The police chief died a year later in coma nobody dared to challenge Bob or even attempt to pin him down for his crimes. After that, everybody is afraid to be the enemy of Bob.
Every day is a bloody day, every day many innocent people are killed. Every day is a red alert day. Beware of "Bob"!

The Girl in Red by Wenqi

They were a pair of lovers. But that was in the past.
He looked for ways to kill time these days. He always worked hard and put in overtime in these days. He was weak because he was torturing himself. After work, he smoked and drank heavily. He was decadent after that day. His friends could not do anything for him. Although they all knew that he was sorrowful. Recently, he had the feelings that some one was observing and following him. He was doubtful, but he can not do anything. If he goes to police about this, he may be regarded as a madman.

One day, he worked overtime again. There was no more subway. He did not want to go home, walked along the void street, with the wind caressing his face. He wanted to forget about the pain, but he could not.
Suddenly, a girl in red appeared in front of him. He was stunned, he recognized her. “It is really you? You have returned to me? Why did you leave me for such a long time?” He tried to catch the girl’s hands. He only was grasping the cold night air. He looked at her, not understanding.
She smiled sadly “please listen to me. I do not have much time.”
“Since that day, I kept following you. nobody could see me, because I am just a soul. I saw you change. You torture yourself. So many times I wanted to call you and tell you I am beside you, but I could not. Nobody could see me and hear me. I could just barely appear after midnight as a shadow.
Originally I did not want to appear in your life any more to disturb you before I leave this world entirely. Every night, I gaze at you by your bed and left before and leave before day. I did not know if you felt my presence. But I hear you were calling my name in the dreams, with the tears in your face. You still can not forget me. But I did not know whether to feel happy, because I really do not want you to lead an empty life because of me.
That day, your friends asked you out to a party to make you happy. That day, they introduced a pretty girl to you and encouraged you to try to be friends with her for a period of time. Although I felt lost when I saw this, I know that whatever your friends did are for you good, they wanted you put away the memory of you and me and start a new life. They wanted that the new girl would help you to find new hope in your life. But on that day, you became furious after hearing they words. They were shocked by your reaction. You ran out of the party room to a tree. You were crying desperately and loudly under the tree. You were calling my name, but did you know I was just beside you then. You could not see me and I could not speak to you. I was so near to you, but we were so far apart.
After that day, I really felt I prefer you forget me rather than see you live like this. I have to speak to you once before I leave this world; I have to let you know something. Please promise me, do not treat yourself like this. You still have a future. Do not give up your life just because of me. If you really love me, please do this for me. That day, you sent me 999 roses, which meant everlasting love. They looked as red as blood. You know I really felt I was the most blessed person in the world. It is a pity that happiness was so short. We crossed the road, hanging the roses in my arms. A car sped towards to us and I pushed you away immediately. The roses flew out of my hands and lay on the ground. I was bleeding. With the roses scattered on the ground, my vision was becoming red gradually. I was lying among the sea of roses, a sign of your love for me. And there is something else I want you to know. I do not regret what I did. If the God gives me another chance, I will also push you away forthwith again. I am willing to give up anything for you even my life. I love you!
My time is near. I think I have to leave now. Please remember what I said. Promise me that you will be alright! Bye, my dear.”
She left with a smile on her face.
“I promise you!” He stood there, with rolls of tears, watching the red figure blend in to the first rays of dawn.

The Castle of Red by Qi Long

At the centre of the Pacific Ocean, was a small island. On the island, there was a kingdom. Not many were aware about this secluded kingdom at that time. The people lived peacefully there. There was a prince called David who was the third son of the king. He liked exploring most because he liked to collect curio.

One day, he went to the red-leaf forest alone. He had heard about a treasure in this forest. Followed what the elderly told him, he found the place and started to dig. After one day’s digging, he found a small crystal container under the biggest tree of the forest. There was some red liquid in it. He was very curious and satisfied. He brought it home and put it in his locker.

Time passed normally as usual, David continued his favorite pastime and explored many places. Three month later, the prince fell ill. It was like a fire was racing inside his body and he would explode at any time. Suddenly, he could not control himself. He started to run, because he wanted consume the massive unnatural energy inside his body. He ran around the castle continuously. He did not stop running until he fell dead from exhaustion. Then his whole body turned red.

His death became a mystery. Everyone believed that his death had something to do with the evil spirits. There must be a ghost in the castle. Because the king had banned the speculation about David’s death out of sorrow, no one dared to talk about it. However, just two months after David’s death, the people in the castle died one after another. They all had the same phenomenon as David before they died and their skin turned to red after they died. People started to suspect whether there were really some ghosts in the castle. Why did all the victims the same way die in? Finally, the king had no choice but to leave the castle. From that point onwards, the castle was known as “The Castle of Death”.

For the next three years, people stayed away from the castle. The residents of this island dwindled in numbers through the three years; even the king had left this island eventually.

It was said that there were ten people who wanted to explore the castle and look for the real reason for the death. They are a group of investigators form overseas. They had heard this many days before. All of them were very curious about it. Thus ten of them met each other under a very special situation. And after their decision, they prepared for ten days. They just bought some food and drinks simply, and the necessary tools. After that, they started their risk.

The whole castle was rusty in red. Under the grey clouds, one could see the four high red walls. It was all dark inside the castle. The cold wind was beating upon them, and they could hear the crows from the dark forest warning them about the danger. The lightning had lit up the whole sky, the thunder never arrived. The explorers were not frightened by these. They decided to camp in this castle to wait for the so-called ghosts.
One day…
Two days…
Three days…

One month had passed, and they did not detect any supernatural forces in the castle. So they went back and told their friends that the castle was not haunted at all. The red deaths of the prince must be untrue. Someone in the past must have created this story to scare others. It was not true.

This news spread the whole island suddenly. They all gathered to cheer for their ten heroes. And also they held a big feast to celebrate the big discovery by their ten heroes. This celebration lasted for three day as they were really happy that they do not have to be scared every day. However, behind the celebrations, what was waiting for the ten so-called heroes. Did they really succeed?

Two months after the celebration, the ten heroes died one after the other. They also turned red after they died. Many people believed that they must have been killed by the ghosts. And the evil ghosts really exist inside the castle. No one dared to explore the castle after that. And most people of the kingdom left this island. This kingdom disappeared from the world map from then on.

Night, Sea and Shadow by Shihan

No star, no moon, not even the silhouette of people can be seen. The sea appears to be black. On a still night like this, it would have completely become a mosaic of darkness if it is still. The waves are splashing hard against the rocks with a vengeance. One wave follows the other continuously as if some mysterious unknown but powerful forces are acting on them. They rush to the beach with tremendous momentum. It looks like a sea of white-frothing running towards the serene beach from the ocean, eager to wreck damage. When the sea meets the land, the grating roar of the waves against the pebbles cuts the silence of the night like a knife scrapping on a piece of ice. Then the energy of the next wave of white monsters in the dark night follows, up the high strand, begin, and cease, and then again. With tremulous cadence slow, it brings in the note of loneliness.

A shadow is perches at the edge of the seaside against the bitter cold wind. The dark air whips around his young and delicately carved face and playfully draws his black T- shirt backwards. The oversized T-shirt hangs awkwardly from the shoulders of the tall and lean figure. The clear eyes fringed with thick black eyelashes have no gleam in them. Only the movements of the tides are reflected into his eyes. His head is down but the shivering eyelashes betray his dark image.
“I killed another person today.” A sigh breaks out from his heart. When he recalls about the bloody and horrible scene happened just now, he feels nausea from within.
“Why I have to kill people every day? Why I have to risk my life to work for the ‘Black’ Community? I am only a 16 years-old teenager. Why can’t I lead a life like others?” This time a strong, forceful and angry voice cried out in his mind.
“You have no choice. Isn’t it?” Another sarcastic voice retorted.

He suddenly starts to laugh madly. The horrifying, lonely laugh echoes upon the vast sea and wafts back again and again. “Yes, I don’t have a chance”. His body trembles vigorously and the blackest memory embedded in the deepest corner of his heart starts to flow out to him like the tides rushing up to the beach. Dark and unstoppable.

His sixteen years are quite different from the normal teenagers’. At the age of two, he was forsaken by his mother who ran away with another guy after his father died. He was looked after by his sixty years old grandma, the only relative he had in this world. When he was four years old, his grandma fell sick. He did not know what to do but crying at her bedside everyday. One night, he went out to the sea near his poor little house. He wanted to cry there so that his grandma would not know and worry about him. He liked the sea as he felt that it listened to all his sadness. The walk changed his life forever. He saw a guy in a mask shot another person to death. The guy did not see him at first. After he took off his mask and turned around, he seemed shocked to see the little boy, who was too afraid to run off. Surprisingly, the guy only asked for his name and walked away briskly from the dead body. The next day, the same guy came to his house and asked him to work for his community “Black”. He promised money and medicine for his grandma. From that day on, he was trained by the secret community the art of killing every night. During the daytime, he led the life as a normal and bubbly teenager. His poor grandma, who knew nothing of this, kept insisting that he should go to school and become an engineer like his father. When he turned 14, he killed his first target in the process of getting important political documents as instructed by “Black”. He did not know how dirty his hands were. He could not count how many lives he was responsible for …....

Another strong wave hits the rock and sends a loud splash which drags him out of his painful dark memory. The chill of night runs through every cell of his but the voice in his mind does not seem to silence.
”I detest my life! I hate “Black”! Why they kill so many people just for achieving their own goals?”
“I hate ‘Black’! They made me a monster, a killing monster.”
“I hate black! It is so empty and helpless. It is dirty! It conceals life and everything!”
“I hate black! I hate black! I hate black……”

The furious voice howled in his mind hysterically. The figure shakes more violently. His chest heaves and falls with each breath he takes.
In this dark moonless night, a tear slowly rolls down but no one sees it in the balckness.

Red supper by Luping
Jerky Chan crouched in one of the corners in his home. The home is not really a home. The whole area is only about thirty square meters. No television, no air-conditioning, no sofa. Expect for a bed in the left corner of his home, there is no other furniture in his house. The room is wet and full of humidity.
He looked out through the window. He realized it was in the morning already. The cold light of dawn made his face looked more impassive. Yesterday he lost in gambling again and all his money was gone. Nothing was left.
He trembled and groaned “Why is life so hard for me? I lost all of my things in my life! Even my wife and children left me! I am totally alone! Nobody bothers about me anymore!” He scratched his messy hair, tears was rolling in his eyes. He couldn’t control his sad emotion anymore, he wailed with bitter sorrow. The sobbing lasted for a long time.
There was still no sunlight in the room. The room is full of coldness and always under the shadow. He slept for a while.
Jerky was waked up by the sound of firecrackers. “Today is the Chinese New Year!” Jerky murmured “I’ve promised my younger brother that I will have New Year dinner with him and his family.”
Because of the promise Jerky went to his younger brother’s home.
“I am so glad that you come today!” Jerky’s brother Jacky welcomed Jerky with a warm hug as he opened his door. “Come in first, my wife cooked many tasty dishes for you! Take a seat! Oh, and you want coffee or tea?” “Coffee’’. Jerky looked around his younger brother’s home. The place was quite commodious and roomy. All the furniture looked very high-class. They also decorated their house in red to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The curtains were changed to red color with many dark red Chinese words on it. The window was also pasted with many pieces of red traditional Chinese paper-cut. A lot of hot pimientos toys hanged on the top of the room door. The whole room was filled with red and happiness. The family was in a festive mood. But Jerky found all these hurting his eyes. He thought of his own house and family. No one was with him, they all left him. Compared to his younger brother, Jerky found himself so pitiful and poor, living with no self-esteem and dignity. He felt ashamed. Bitterness oozed from his heart.
During dinner time, they had dinner at a round table. Two of Jacky’s cute children sat between their parents. Jacky and his wife smiled to their children and kept nipping dishes into the children’s bowl. The family looked quite nice together. But this scene only made Jerky felt more disgusted and pitied himself even more. He didn’t want to see others having a complete family and showing off how they love each other in front of him. He felt a little dizzy, he shook his head and looked up. As he saw all the red decorations, he felt giddier.
Jacky’s wife then said, “Jerky! Tell you some good news! You know, Jacky got a better job recently! That company treats Jack very nice! It gives him 1million per month. That’s really a good salary! We won’t need to be that thrifty in our life anymore! After Chinese New year we are going to Europe to have a relaxing holiday!”
Jacky nodded: “Thank God! I am so lucky to get that job position so successfully!”
Two children cheered “Wow! Our father is the best!”
Jerky smiled bitterly, he thought about how he never had a steady job. His wife was also not as beautiful as Jacky’s and even she took his children away from him. Now he was broken. As he listened to his brother and their family sharing their happy life with him, an anger of fired filled his heart! A flame was burning in his heart. His mind kept saying: That’s not fair! That’s not fair! We are brothers but why do we have such different destinies? God is not fair! I hate...I hate you! Why do you treat me this way!”
He could not breathe. A sudden pain shot up his skull; closed his eyes tightly and tried to ease it a little bit. But at this point of time, all his bad unwanted memories came out of his mind and replayed again and again. It was just like having a nightmare. He opened his eyes. His eyes went totally red and grieved tears were rolling. As he opened his eyes he saw his brothers and his family smiling happily to each other, they looked so perfect just together. A sense of jealousy and unfairness feeling broke from the dam of reason. Suddenly, his vision turned red!
He shouted, “Stop! Stop! Stop!”
Jacky’s family reacted with a great amazement. They tried to say something but now Jerky could not hear in a word. All that occupied his mind were jealousy, grief and indignation. All that his sight fall within were red! He shouted with madness and took up the fruit knife on the tea table and lunged towards the two children. Unexpected things happened within the next few moments. Jerky took the knife and stab them into the children’s forehead with all his energy! Red hot blood bedewed the knife. As Jerky saw the blood he burst out laughing. Two children dead! Jacky was shocked and his wife screamed loudly! Jerky turned to Jacky’s wife and stabbed the knife into her stomach hard. Lurid blood sprouted out and flowed all over the floor. Jacky was in a huge indignation, he shouted and gave Jerky a big punch. Jerky’s eyes were hurt and fresh blood flowed out. He wiped away the blood carelessly and laughed freely. Jacky cried hoarsely “Freak! Crazy! I will…I will kill!” Before Jacky could finish his words, a knife found its place inside Jacky’s heart! Jacky collapsed in the pool of blood.
Jerky looked at his hands which was full of fresh red blood as he look in the sight of the liveless bodies soaking in the pool of red liquid. He laughed, louder and louder, the laughter changed to a cry. After a conniption of screams he plummeted on top of the dead bodies. The house was as red as the red festive decorations.

The Girl Who Feared Darkness by Xiaolei

She was a fair girl who was born on a farm. In her memory, like most of the neighbourhood children, she enjoyed the gaiety and warmth that her family gave to her for the past twelve years. But on a single fateful night, her life had changed. She became Mary, a girl who was afraid of the night, and lived in gloominess.

She could not forget that night, when she was twelve years old. It was tenebrous both outside and inside the house. As she was sleeping, she was waken by the shouts and screams from her parents. She did not know why they were quarreling, but she realized the seriousness of the situation, her mother made her way out of the door and never came back. She did not even look back, for once. Ultimately, mother’s silhouette dissolved in the darkness. From that moment, she began to fear darkness. The happy girl was engulfed by the darkness in her.

She could not believe that how she grew up in these seven years. Every time she was lying on the bed, she would naturally miss her mum. But she no longer cried, as her tears had dried up. She was unwilling to close her eyes at the night. She was afraid that if she closed her eyes, she had to face the darkness alone, which wrenched her mother’s presence from her pitilessly. She no longer had a good sleep; maybe there was nobody saying good night and kissed her forehead any more. Her body always shook at night and she woke up from her involuntary movements. She found it difficult to energize herself; maybe nobody told her how to smile and greet the morning sunshine. Her heart was palpitating in the shadows all the time. Until Jim, a nice and mild boy, came into her life.

Mary now found a purpose to smile more often after she met Jim. She began to tell Jim things about herself, but she never talked about the past seven years of her life. But Jim knew Mary well, including her fear of darkness. At the moment he asked Mary to be his girlfriend, he vowed himself that one day, he would help her to escape from the life in the shadows.

April the first was their two-month anniversary as a couple. Jim brought what he bought and prepared and made a phone call to Mary outside her house at a quarter to midnight.

“Mary, do you remember what the date today is? Not April fool’s day, but…”
“Yeah Jim I will not forget.”
“I am waiting for you at the end of the aisle at the back of your house…”
“But…but…it is dark there.”
“Do not be afraid, I will look out for you.”

Jim hanged up the phone. He quickly finished what he needed to do, and saw Mary walking towards him fast. He stood up, switched on the romantic music that he loved the most and walked towards her with open arms. He hugged her and asked her close her eyes. Mary thought for a short while, and closed her eyes. He held her hands to his chest, and guided a trembling her to the end of aisle.

“Now, you can open your eyes.”

Mary opened her eyes. She was moved by the sight before. On the ground, candles were lit and arranged in a shape of big heart. She could not control her overflowing tears. She just stood there, and listened to what Jim had to say to her.

“Mary, from the very first day I got together with you, I promised myself that I will help you to escape from the fear of darkness. I want to tell you that wherever you are, I will hold your hands and guide you through the darkness. My love for you will light up your dark world, just like what the candles are doing now.”
“I want you to dispel the fear of darkness in you. I’ll make you felicitous.”

Black memory by Zhang Lin
The living room was bathed in icy black as the sun sank into a bank of clouds. Ava sat on the black sofa quietly; the black file case beside her was left behind by Alan. Inside, the black video tape sat quietly.
Ava’s memory flashed back to one year ago.
Ava rushed to her classroom as she was already late. Suddenly she bumped into a person with a charming flower-like smell. Ava looked up. He was a boy wearing a black shirt, trendy black pants and a pair of black Converse canvas shoes. His black wavy hair was casually put down. His smile oozed a magnetic charm that Ava found it hard to stop staring.
As Ava suddenly realized what she was doing, she quickly said sorry, and then started to pick up everything the boy had dropped. She saw a black video tape. Before she could have a good look of the video tape, the boy quickly seized it from her hand. A few beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
“Sorry, the video tape is mine. I, I am Alan who is a new student in this university.”
The moment Ava heard his words, she felt dizzy. For a moment she could not see anything except blackness, within these few seconds, an image of her wearing a fancy gown burst into her mind.
“Am I mad? I must have been thinking of marrying this handsome guy. Stop that unrealistic dream!” Ava thought and looked at Alan doubtfully.
“Have we met before?”
The black doubts in her mind were cast off as a beam of shining sunlight pricked her eyes. “What on earth am I talking about? Stop behaving foolishly.” Ava wanted to bang her head as soon as she popped out those words. Although Ava regretted for her abnormal words and behaviours, she could still sensed the blissful expression on Alan’s face.
“Er, I mean I am Ava.”
Alan’s smiling eyes drooped slightly but quickly resumed his amiable expression.
At the end of school on that day, Ava found Alan was waiting for her with a bunch of tulips.
No doubt Ava was surprised: “Thank you, how do you know I love black tulips?” She closed her eyes and kissed the black petals.
“You must have been dreaming about decorating your wedding feast with them.” Alan smiled jovially.
“Have you been spying me? You understand me so well.” Ava exclaimed.
“I think it must be predestination for us to meet and be more than friends.” As Alan said this, he looked into Ava’s eyes deeply with his loving eyes.
Perplexed, Ava had a somewhat befuddled look on her face. “Am I dreaming? Alan is the hottest guy I have ever met. I could almost imagine both of us being blessed by everyone during our wedding…” Unfortunately, Ava could not finish her bright idea but engulfed by blackness and fainted into a pair of warm and strong arms.
Ava chuckled as she thought of these sweet memories. She reached out for the black file case beside her. Suddenly, a scene came to her mind.
It was Alan holding her shoulders tightly.
“No matter how curious you are, please do not watch the video tape.” Alan looked at Ava’s eyes unflinchingly.
“But I am your girlfriend already! It is just a video tape!” Ava moaned. “Okay, never mind! I give up!”
“Sorry, Ava, don’t be upset! I will show it to you when it is right time for it.”
Ava thought: “Alan is going to show it to me someday anyway! Why don’t I watch it right now?” grainy pictures up a wedding ceremony appeared on the TV screen. The camera zoomed into the couple.
She played the video.
“Let us bless this couple, Alan Black and Ava Potter.” That was a statement from the priest.
Ava was stunned.
She saw Alan holding her hands. Ava looked at Alan gently as he kissed the back of her hand; they walked down the staircase with flaming red carpet, and there were tulips all over. Suddenly, she lost her steps and tumbled down the staircase. Ava laid motionlessly on the red carpet. Everyone was shocked; they rushed toward Ava the moment they realized what had happened.
It was the end of the video. Everything turned black again.
Ava sat on the sofa statuesquely and stared blankly at the black screen at as if she was dead. All kinds of emotions scrambled into her brain: puzzled, disbelieving, furious, and intricate. She tried hard to remember what had happened before she and Alan met? Why she was not told by anyone around her? Why she can not remember everything?
At that moment, there was the clicking sound of Alan opening the door. Not loud but clear, she felt pain of looking into her memories for answers.
“Why don’t you turn on the light?” Alan asked
Ava felt giddy and sank into a sea of blackness.

The Black World by Yunru

Opening his eyes slowly, still dizzy, Gabriel looked around. This was a black world. Everything was in shadows. He surveyed the dark clouds and then squinted at the dusty road ahead. A bitter smile stretched across his thin lips. “It is my own choice.” He settled down to his fate.
Life went on smoothly. Gabriel was quite satisfied with this new world. Though he was new, no one have ever asked why he came here. They seemed to know. Everyone was unfailingly polite. At the same time, nobody was too close to others. “This indeed is a world I want. No colour to disturb my eyes, no love to trouble my heart, thus no pain to suffer.”
The unforgettable scene flashed in his head again. “God, please bring me to elsewhere without love, even if only a month. I shall use my remaining life-span in exchange.” He heard himself plead despairingly but determinedly. Gabriel had broken up with his girlfriend. His world collapsed at once. There seemed to be no reason for existing in the world anymore, since nothing was left except pain. God had agreed and brought him here, though he still gave Gabriel a chance – a chance to come back. He smiled, “I’d never need it anyway.”
However, while Gabriel was waiting for death peacefully, he met her, Jane, the exact projection of his girlfriend. He was stunned, realizing he could never escape his fate. Wherever he was – both the colourful world and this black world – he still loved her. “If someone loves you, you can come back.” God’s heaven voice echoed awfully in his mind. “I must go back, with Jane, together.”
Making up his mind, he started sending Jane a black rose with a delicately designed card expressing his love daily. However Jane never said anything, seeming never care. Gabriel was puzzled. He was gentle and handsome. Jane always treated him well. She even said once that he was the only friend she had ever got. Yet she would not be with him.
After a night tossing and turning in bed, he finally approached Jane: “Why not give me a chance?” His body stiffened at her icy reply: “Because there is no red rose.” He was even more confused and frustrated. Why? This was such a bad excuse. This world was black. How could there possibly be red? Furthermore, how the hell was love related to the colour of rose? If only love could be decided by the colour of rose, how could he possibly end up here? Gabriel only knew that from the day they met, Jane never smiled at him, let alone telling him she love him.
It was he, who fell desperately deep in love. “Why? Doesn’t this world eliminate love? Isn’t here supposed to be free of pain? Why do I feel so hurt? ” Gabriel laughed dreadfully and ran away. Grief flashed on Jane’s face. Her eyes darkened. Her outstretched arm fell helplessly.
On the last day of the month, Gabriel lied on bed, stared stonily ahead waiting for the coming of death. “The exchange was wrong from the start. I am a fool. I can never escape love. I should know it…” He shook his head, wishing to throw the girl’s images out of his head.
Anyway all these were not important anymore. For a dying person, nothing was necessary.
The door was pushed open suddenly. Jane, the girl he loved deeply, walked in, with a basket full of withered black roses. He knew immediately those were the ones he sent. His expression softened at the very sight of her. Sitting up straight, he asked in a voice mixed with uncovered delight and anxiety, “Why are you here?”
“You can only spend one month here, if I don’t come now, we will never see each other anymore.” She muttered with a gloomy and guilty smile.
“Go! I don’t need your pity.” Pain revealed in his eyes.
“Have you ever regretted of coming here?” Jane asked plainly.
“Of course I have. The choice itself was a mistake. I still love you, cannot forget you, cannot escape pain and cannot make you love me…”Gabriel choked, leaning back with a tired smile on his face.
“I’m grateful that God sent you here. You don’t understand. I liked you from a long time ago…”
He cut her off, “I don’t need your pity. No need to lie to me.”
“I did not lie to you.” She stood still, looking into his eyes, “I liked you from the first time you sent me a black rose.”
“Impossible.” He shook his head. “Or you won’t wait till now.”
“Because…” She paused, “I want to spend more time with you… you have asked for a world without love. Here it is. In this black world, except those who trade with God, such as you, nobody is allowed to love someone. To tell anyone the three words means the end of life.”
He stunned, not able to think. Jane leaned forwards to his ear: “I don’t want you to die. Thus I LOVE YOU. Bye, my dear.” He reached out his hand desperately trying to hold her. But he only caught a handful of black sand.
With a sudden dizzy feeling, he returned. The world was colourful. He became the best planter for roses and grew a garden full of beautiful and delicate red roses. He lived happily till the end of his life for himself, and for Jane.

Red Dream by Yichen

I have a dream that I can see red one day. It may be ridiculous and foolish to most of people. But that is what I always hoped for since I was eight and it has never come true. Every day, I dream that I dance with her happily in a sea of red flowers. When I wake up and realize that it is not true, red disappeared once again from my world.

I can still remember clearly the first time she talked to me. It was ten years ago which I was eight. She was new in our class and sat next to me.
“Hello! I’m Angel. What is your name?” she said with great enthusiasm and a broad smile.
She wore a red dress which was very dazzling. Two bright eyes and the full and rosy lips on her round face made her look so perfect. She really looked like a beautiful angel.
“I’m … I’m John.” I was so nervous that I muttered under my breath.
“It’s nice to sit next to you, John. I hope we can become good friends.” She said fervently.
Actually, I was a very quiet and diffident person. So nobody in my class bothered to talk to me. I was really surprised and grateful that she wanted to be friends with me. After a few days, we became the best friends. She told me that almost all her clothes were red because it was her favourite colour. Red represents passion. That was why she was always full of energy. And I also found red colour to be more and more attractive because of her.
One day, we went to a park and boated in the river. Suddenly, she opened her mouth widely and screamed very loudly. Then she smiled at me and said, “Come, John. Do the same as me.”
“No. I don’t want. There are so many people around us. It is very embarrassing.”
“That’s why you are so quiet. You have to be confident so that people want to talk to you. Don’t be as timid as a mouse. Just shout it out! Come on, you can do it!” she said with certainly.
“OK. I will try to do it.” Then I shouted, in an attempt to match her passion.
“Not loud enough. Follow after me. We shout together.”
Then I became more audacious and we shouted crazily and happily. I was not afraid any more. And the people around us just smiled at us. After that, I was not quiet in class any more as I was not too concerned about what other people would think about me. And I became popular among my classmates. It was all because of her help.
However, bad things always happen when one does not realize yet. Angel did not come to school for a few days. At first, I thought she was just sick. But she was absent for nearly a week. I was a bolt from the blue when I heard from my teacher that Angel emigrated to another country because her father changed his job. She would not come to school any more. I would not see her any more. How could I live without her? I was so depressed that I developed a very serious fever. When my mother gave me an apple to cheer me up, I could not even see the colour. I could not see red, my favourite colour, any more. I felt like it was the end of my life. My eyes blurred with tears every day. I hoped I could see red one day, I hoped Angel could come back one day. I waited and waited…

It was Christmas Eve. The ground was covered in a pure white blanket of snow. It is gleaming under the light from the moon. I can see a red figure moving towards me. It is red! It is the colour that I yearn to see the most! It is the colour that I have not seen for ten years! When the red figure moves nearer, it was a girl who in a red dress. Could she be Angel? Is that the girl I love? Is this the girl I am waiting for? I can not believe it. Is it a truth or dream? Or is it a Christmas gift that the Father Christmas gave me?

Midnight piano music by minyun

A bright and clean moon shines in the dark, starless sky. The clock strikes twelve, a piece of melancholic piano music wafts out of an old black house, hovering in the cold air, weaving in and out of the moon rays.
Dear David:
How is everything going? I have successfully found a job in the city! Now I am looking for a house to rent, Can I bother you to help me find a cheap one?
Yours
John
It was an early autumn morning. The air was light and slightly chilly. John put on his jacket and went out of the hotel to meet his friend David. He arrived at the meeting destination early. David was still on his way. He wandered around the residential area and stopped in front of an old black house.
A dull black color covered the walls of the two-storey high house. Under the soft sunlight, it seemed so detached from the lively, colorful world. Classical design of the structure made it look more extraordinary. And its ancientry made one wonder whether it was built in the last century. John was totally captivated and amazed by it. He just stared at it with a gap and couldn’t remove his eyes.
“Hey! What are you looking at?” David suddenly tapped John from behind.
“This amazing house!” John replied without turning his head.
Looking carefully at the house, David gasped with recognition: “This house!”
“What?” perplexed, John turned around and looked at David.
“The haunted house! People never came out once they lived inside! Others couldn’t find them! Neighbors always hear piano music coming from the house at midnight!” David shuddered.
“Nah! I never believe in ghosts!” John shrugged his shoulders, “Is it expensive to rent?”
“No. Nobody has rented it for a long time, it’s extremely cheap.”
“I have made up my mind. I am going to rent it!” John said, with determination and excitement. It was love at first sight for him.
Very quickly, John moved into the house in three days. Entering the house, John was astonished again! It was dark inside the house. Sunlight seemed to be unwelcomed guests in the black house. They were unable to penetrate the windows and light up the house. From the moment he entered the door, the only color John saw was black, making him a bit sad.

The clock struck twelve, it was midnight. A melody of sad piano music suddenly wafted from the top of the house and broke the stillness of the night. Puzzled and awake, John furrowed his eyebrows and gazed at the ceiling, wondering who was playing piano at midnight. Suddenly, he remembered the words David said three days ago. “Why not get up to have a look?” he jumped out of his bed as soon as his curious thought ceased to exist.
Mysteriously, the corridor’s light could not be switched on. John felt a bit nervous facing the pitch black darkness all around him. Hesitantly, he ventured into the heart of immense darkness, barely able to see the vague outline of the house and its objects. The night air was so cold that he was trembling. Walking along the dark corridor slowly and carefully, John could detect the fast thumping of his heart. The soft sounds of piano music mingled with the noisy sounds of his heart beat. His mind was confused. He could not think clearly. Instinct led him to the end of the corridor.
When he reached the end of the corridor, a shiny black staircase suddenly appeared, leading to the attic of the house. John widened his eyes and gawked at the staircase with his mouth open.
“What am I going to do? Go up or retreat? There might be unexpected danger in the attic!” John felt his throat very dry and swallowed hard. “But am I able to fall sleep if I go back to bed? There is no ghost in the world. There would be nothing horrible in front of me!” He tried to convince himself. His face was pale and taut under the dim moonlight.
Hesitating for a long time, he stepped up the staircase tremblingly, moving towards the attic in reluctant anticipation.
The door uttered a squeaking sound when it was opened slowly. John stepped into a shabby room and saw something unexpected. There was only a huge, beautiful, black piano shining in the moonlight! Unconsciously, John went near the piano and sat down on the bench. There was a piece of piano music score sitting on the piano. Without thinking further, John started to play it. John had never learned piano before. His fingers danced gracefully on the keyboards. They no longer seemed to belong to him. They were controlled by a very magical and powerful force! After finishing it, John wanted to have a rest. But the same kind of magical powerful force compelled him to continuing playing; and playing. He could not stop!
The next morning, John didn’t come out from that black house. Nobody could find him. Neighbors continued to hear melancholic piano music at midnight again!

BLACK by Liu Sha
Aaron was walking on the street when he saw a black box lying in a corner. It must be left behind by someone.

“Whose box is this?” he looked around and shouted out.

The sky was dark, the outline of the sun blurred as the warm yellow rays blended with the flaming red. People trudged along the street with tired bodies. It seemed that nobody noticed him. Aaron looked around and then stepped forward to have a closer look at the box. It was a small delicate palm-sized wooden box with beautiful brown rose pattern on the cover. Dark-colored words covered all over its surface. His gaze was locked on those words. They looked like some ancient holy imprecation. Aaron took the box in his hand, it was light.

He wondered what was inside. Some treasure? A map of a secret island? Or some thing with holy power? Or maybe some evil things? He felt that there was a power that prompted him to open the box. Or maybe it was just his curiosity. He felt a little nervous. His put his shivering hand on the box paused for a hesitant moment and opened it.

Nothing was inside. Aaron was surprised and a little disappointed.

“OK, at least I got a beautiful box.” He stood up and brought it home.

Aaron woke up to the irritating ring at eight in the morning as usual. He grabbed his green alarm clock and attempted to silent it with his icy stare. He was shocked. Something was not right. His alarm clock was not green, it was black! He immediately got up from his bed and opened his eyes widely. He was now fully awake. There should be golden sunlight, blue curtains, red sofa and colorful paintings on the wall. But he could not see those colors; he could only see white wall, grey light rays and black furniture.

“No! No! This is not true. I must be dreaming!” He murmured repeatedly.

He closed his eyes hardly and opened them again. But it was still the same. All he could see was a gloomy world. He felt the cold sweat streaming down his back. He was shivering, not because he was nervous, not because he was cold, but because he was frightened.

“NO! NO!” he shouted out. He did not know why it became like this, his mind was blank. There is reason to explain this abnormal thing happened to him. THE BOX! A thought suddenly appeared in his mind. Maybe there was some power inside that box, it was some evil thing, and it destroyed his world..

“No, that is impossible! This is just temporary. No, it can’t be like that!” He put his head between his hands and cried out in despair.

As the time passed by, Aaron felt increasingly hopeless. He went to see many doctors, but the only result he got was that there was nothing wrong with his eyes and his body. Doctors told him that it might because he was under great pressure. They suggested him to see a psychologist. All the doctors said the same things to him.

But Aaron did not believe the doctors. It must be the box, the black box! It was the box that destroyed him and brought him the horrible life! It was the evil, it was the source of his black world! He tried to destroy the black box. But it never broke apart, no matter how hard he smashed it.

He could feel that the black shadows were eating his soul. His world became darker and darker. He saw no colors expect in gradients of grey and black, he had no feelings besides gloominess and fear. No one cared about him, no one understood him, and no one believed him. It was a world with no color, it was a world with no love. It was a hopeless world with only horror and nightmares.

He had nightmares every night. He saw a woman in black laughing loudly at him. Her face was distorted and scary. And she said “There is no way you can escape!” He saw monsters moving in the black shadow and staring at him with their bloody red eyes.

All he wanted was color. Red color – the color of life, the color he could see in his nightmares in the bloodshot eyes of the monstrous beings. He asked the shop assistant to bring him everything in red. Red balls, red caps, red paints…But all he saw was the endless black.

BLOOD! He suddenly smiled. Yes, he could see red if there was blood. He rushed into kitchen crazily to search for a knife. He held it with his quivering hand and put it to his wrist. He cut into his veins with no hesitation, as if somebody was controlling the hand with the knife. He waited expectantly.

But all he saw was the black liquid flowing out from his body. His pupils contracted.

The Black Bottle by Luxi

With a ponderous sound, the heavy wooden door closed as his father’s back disappeared into the study. And then Andy heard a crisp metallic sound. He knew that his father locked the door. He looked at the timeworn door with a sigh. Andy sat at the table in the living room, held his head in his palms and fell into memories.

Andy moved into this house nine years ago with his father, after his mother died in a accident. He remembered that the timeworn door was brand-new at that time, but it already had the ponderous sound. The image of the door brought to mind his father and the black bottle of liquid. Andy was aware that his father went into the study every day with the black bottle. At eight o’clock punctually, his father would appear at the door with a black bottle in his hand. He went into the study with ghostly silence until the sound of the wood door broke it. His father usually spends half an hour inside the study and then he cane out quietly with the empty black bottle. He always went straight to the kitchen and prepared the supper for Andy. It was as if nothing happened.

At first, Andy was very curious about the black bottle. He searched the whole kitchen and even the house for the black bottle, but every time he ended his search with disappointment. Gradually, he became used to the strange action of his father and the black bottle as his head was so full of other things, of plans and schemes of a teenage boy that he sometimes forget about the black bottle.

However, Andy was quite free today. He twiddled his thumbs and thought about the bottle. There were a lot of questions floating in his head. Where did the bottle come from? What did the bottle contain? What was it used for? He decided to discover the secret of the mysterious black bottle. He went into the kitchen with an idea. He set a small fire with the dish cloth. As the fire grew, Andy went towards the wooden door and knocked door in an urgent manner. When his father ran out anxiously from the study with the black bottle in his hand, Andy heightened his voice and shouted, “Papa, hurry up… fire! Big fire! It is still growing…”

When Andy’s father saw the flames coming out of the kitchen, he put down the black bottle without thinking and ran into the kitchen. Andy grabbed the bottle immediately with a wicked smile. Andy ran into the study in a hurry and locked the door with a snap.

Suddenly, a hush fell over the study. Andy held the bottle tightly and tried to calm down. After a while, he turned the bottle around and searched for some clues. There was no label on the bottle. He sat at the desk and studied the bottle. It was about four inch high, but it seemed quite heavy. The black bottle was bright black as if it was polished daily. When Andy got close to it, he could see his reflection on the body of the bottle. He opened the little black lid and used one eye to look into the bottle. Because of the black bottle, he could not identify the colour of the liquid inside and it does not have any smell. He decided to try it.

He put the tip of the black bottle against his lip and let the thick liquid flow out slowly and silently. When the liquid touched his lip, he shivered a bit as the liquid was as cold as ice. He could feel the liquid flow into his throat and down the esophagus, reaching his stomach.

After a few minutes, he felt colder and colder as his body temperature decreased. He crouched in the corner of the study and put his arms around the legs in a frail fetus-like position. For a few seconds he could not feel anything and he thought he was dying. Minutes later, everything resumed. His temperature began to increase and he felt warmer. He felt a bit itchy as his hair on the arms began to grow. He felt much itchier as the time passed by. It was like worms creeping on his skin. He began to scratch himself hard, face, arms, and legs. There was blood flowing out from the skin and where the blood flowed, the skin began to swell and turned black. He was still scratching, but now he was not able to control himself. Blood dripped from his face, arms and along his legs to the floor. His joints swelled like horrible tumours. There were undulated waves under his skin as if the caterpillars were having a party under his skin, they were dancing and binging in his flesh.

His clothes were stretched as his limbs and torso expanded. He thumped his bulging chest frantically as his heart was in so much pain as if it was going to explode. He wanted to scream in agony but he felt his throat was filled with cotton. He opened his mouth to shout for help, no words were uttered. He shambled with great difficulty towards the mirror. When he finally reached it and saw himself in the mirror, his hands held his transmutative head agonizingly and screamed shrilly to the mirror. Suddenly, he saw nothing but blackness.

With a toneless sound, his body hit the floor and a hush fell over the study again.

Diminishing Happiness by xiong wei
My best friend, my teddy bear, my chocolates, my smile, my childhood, all my happiness….Gone...Freezing in cold water…Sinking downwards…Help! Help. Help……

Slowly, the door opened. A beam of light crept into the black room, and a shadow was standing behind the squeaking door hinges.

Closing the door carefully, Jan tiptoed into her brother--John’s bedroom. There was no one else in the house; the only sound she could hear was her own breathing and footsteps. Scanning the deserted room, she was shocked by the gloomy atmosphere there. The windows were tightly shut. There was no sign of life, the curtains fluttered in the occasional breeze. There was nothing else except the basic furniture. The silence, the emptiness of the bedroom was so uncomfortable, almost taunting.

Suddenly, Jan turned her head back. Nothing stirred. But she still had the unsettling feeling of being watched. Unconsciously, Jan furrowed her eyebrows and sighed. Ignoring her rapidly thumping heart, she took slow, deliberate steps around the room, trying to find anything suspicious. “Nothing special…” she murmured, a bit disappointed.

Abruptly, she spotted the corner of a black notebook under the pillow. She inched towards the bed, looking guiltily around her before pulling out the notebook from under the pillow. It was a nice notebook with simple patterns on the cover. On the right corner of it, there was a skull labeled by a kind of strange language. She stared at the notebook, wondering if it was the secret that John was trying to hide from her.

John has changed a lot since last month. It was odd that John, the usual social butterfly, had become a lone wolf. He darkened his fair hair and began to wear black T-shirt and black jeans. He refused to talk to anybody, and he always locked himself in his bedroom. He rarely went out and Jan has not seen him smile for the whole month. It seems quite clear that John was keeping a secret, a secret that affected him so much to the extent of almost being destroyed. Being his only kin, Jan thought she had the responsibility to find out the secret and try to help John. That was the purpose of being in John’s room.

Holding the black notebook, Jan was so overwhelmed with excitement and curiosity that her hands began to tremble. “Is this John’s diary that he confides in? Or is it just a normal notebook? “Jan asked herself. After hesitating for a few minutes, she licked her parched lips nervously and opened the notebook with her guilty hands.

As soon as Jan opened the notebook, something black, something enormous, something smoky, erupted from it. Within an instant, the black fog engulfed the entire bedroom. It suddenly became very cold as if someone has turned on the air-conditioner. No, it was worse. The cold air around Jan did not make her feel cool at all. In stead, she felt a cold air flowing down her spine and she was gripped with visceral fear. Her stomach contract, as if a bucketful of ice has cascaded there, as if the cold was inside her chest and her very heart, as if the thick black was swirling inside her…

Standing in the very heart of the immense black fog, illuminated by the dim moonlight outside of the windows, was a massive figure floating on the air.
Jan had no clue what it was. It was like a massive black boar with hard bony long face, shaped like that of a horse. A pair of blazing eyes, bright as a burning flame, glowed in the darkness. The entire body was rough and blackened with grease. Its tail swished idly from side to side as if it was bored. The thing drew a long, slow, rattling breath, as though it was trying to suck something more than the air and the fog from its surroundings.

“So, you are the next greedy child?” the strange creature gave Jan a mocking smile.

Jan did not reply; she was breathless with fear. She just stood frozen there, paralyzed. At long last, she opened her mouth and muttered”Who…are y…you?”

A hideous grin parted the creature’s thick lips. His probing eyes stared at Jan, ” I am the secret that you want to find out. So, who am I? I am the notebook-monster, the one who eats your brother’s happiness.”

Trying to be calm, she held on to her breath, “Why?”

“Why? It’s a deal! Your brother feeds me his happiness. In return, I give him power—power to run fast, power to think fast and power to attract girls…any powers…” Again, the notebook-monster gave Jan a menacing grin.

Jan swallowed, as though the fact had brought a lump to her throat. All her fear and insecurities stuck in her throat, choking her words. A ghostly silence fell upon the room, and the monster was just staring at Jan, with his sickeningly sweet and terrifying smile.

The seconds felt like an eternity, the monster’s words sliced through the horrible silence, “Come on, which power do you want? And how many happiness can you feed me? I am already starving…”

Hearing those words, Jan’s throat raw, from the raspy breathing could only croak one word,”No!”

No, I do not want any power, I do not want to lose my happiness, I do not want to make a deal with the monster...I…I need to run away…Jan murmured under her breath, shaking her head madly and cupping her mouth to stop herself from screaming. She inched backwards, trying to reach the door without the monster’s notice.

“Trying to escape, is it?” the monster asked with a tone which was just too smooth. While asking, he followed Jan and studied her like a lurking eagle. His eyes were glittering and there was a nasty sneer playing around his mouth. His eyes chilled Jan, causing her to feel faint with fear. The last sound she heard was the monster’s menacing laugh, and nothing else. Horrible visions swam across her closing eyes, and then disappeared. The thin light began to diminish and all Jan could see and feel was just sinking BLACKNESS…

My father is a handsome guy. You can see that he is about 1.78meters in height. His hair is soft and silky. The funny thing is that his hair is a little bit curly, so I always joke that his hair is like a big chrysanthemum. Because his pair of sparkling eyes always look encouraging. Because of the pressure from his work, my father’s skin is not as smoothly as before and his face as always ruddy and yellow. Although life is hard for him a man of difficult times, he keeps smiling to give people a sense of happiness and energy.

My father is such an old-fashioned man. Once I bought a pair of unique jeans with my mother. When he saw the jeans, he shout in a dramatic way:“Then jean is tattered already! You see, there is a hole there! The other side also has! Go and change! Go and change! How can my daughter wear such a lousy trousers!”

My father cares about me a lot. Once, I got fever. After school I went back home, my mother gave me something not oily to eat. I tried my best struggling to finish the homework. Then I went to sleep at about 9o’clock. Normally, I would sleep at about 11:15o’oclock.

About 10o’clock my dad came back from work, he took a shower and ate some snacks. He still did not go to sleep until 10:30o’clock. Mum was puzzled. So she asked him why he didn’t go to sleep earlier. Dad answered:“I wanted to wait for my daughter to finish her homework and then pare an apple for her.” Mum didn’t told Dad about me being unwell as she didn’t want Dad to worry about me. Then father opened my door softly and took a long look before retiring to bed.

That was what my mother told me: After hearing these my heart felt a little bit touched and heavy. My eyes were wet but tears didn’t overflow. I was deeply affected by the love from my father. I can only say thanks to him in my heart.

My father is dearest to me in the world. His name is Lai Xue Ling. He is in his forties, and he is an engineer.

My father has rather short, greasy and sparse hair, and on the top of his head, it is bald. Because of the great stress faced by the middle-age people, my father has a lot of white hair. His mouth looks very funny, it is quite pouting and thick-lipped, but he always wears a friendly smile. His teeth are stained with nicotine by years of smoking. His nose is snubby and he has beautiful double eye-lids. I like his eyes best, not only because of his pretty double eye-lids, but also because his eyes are extremely big and sparkling, especially when he is talking to someone about something exciting.

He has a square face and wide shoulders. His hands are the warmest pair I have ever held. He is a little flabby at the sides and when he smiles, he looks as shy as a young deer. When you first see him, you may think he is a little rude and ferocious, because there are some scars on his face. When my father was young, he used to be very naughty, and once he grabbed the reaphook from his brother, it hurt him, and this made a scar near his mouth on his face.

Something quite interesting happened during my family. When my youngest cousin was about 3 years old, she first saw my father, and she was frightened and began to cry! My father’s face quickly turned red. He felt quite embarrassed! But now my cousin loves my father very much. If you know him better, you’ll realize that he is really a kindhearted and friendly person.

To let our family enjoy better living conditions, he tried his best to make more money. Because his job is usually periodic, after one project is done, he should change his job. Now he lost his job again, and he is strait now, because he has no sense on expenditure, after he lost his job, he got into debt. He is extravagant, when he find something he likes, he will buy it, but it is usually a white elephant, he will feel repentant of buy it soon after he buys it.

My father is also a bad-tempered person and will get angry easily. He is tender and strict at the same time. For example, if I forget to wash clothes for him, he will scold me seriously. But I also remembered that when I was young, about 5 years old, when my mum was alive, he often told stories to me, and played with me. At that time I was the apple in his eyes. When I don’t do well in exams, he will look very sorrowful and worried, but he will never beat me!

He is such an interesting person, that everyone who knows him likes him very much.

Li River is one of the most famous and beautiful scenery in China. Thousands of tourists from other countries are attracted to visit it. Some visitors come back again and again and tell their friends about their memorable trip. Hence, Li River is known as “the best place in the world”.

The Li River that flows from Guilin to Yangshuo is the centerpiece of any trip to northeastern Guangxi Province. Gorgeous Karst peaks gives you surprises at both banks of the limpid river which is under the blue sky and green mountains.

You can always see fishermen or school kids taking rafts floating down the river. The reflection of them, blue sky and verdant mountains form a fascinating picture of man and nature.
The trip starts from south of Liberation Bridge and then goes down. Along the two bends of the river, you can see many different kinds of strange mountains.

Elephant Trunk Hill looks like an elephant sucking water from the river with its long strong trunk. It is covered with green trees, rich grasses and colourful flowers. The enchanting and fantastic art work of nature compels most of the tourists to stop and take photos. The “elephant” stands there firmly, proudly for many decades.

Crown Cave is a crown-like crag which is a water-eroded cave full of classical flavour. It is a wonderful land of various stalactite stone pillars and rock formations in the cave. With bright suitable light, bewitching scenery, it becomes an important excursion site for wide-eyed tourists.

It is said there are nine horses caved on the cliff on the Nine-horses Mountain. If you manage to spot all of them, you will become rich. People start to search for the horses far away. It is obscure and scenery changes with the movement of the ship. Then it becomes clearer and clearer It is obvious that there is a strong-looking horse in the centre. It seems to be galloping quickly. Most of the time people look at the matchless and captivating mountains sadly as they can not spot all nine horses.Li River has much first-rate scenery. It is an ideal place for traveling. People like its taste of a life far away from the cities.

Since I left my country, I have been in Singapore for about four months. As an overseas student, I think it is really a great challenge to me because I have to do all the things by myself. Although it has not been long, I think I have changed a lot .There are so many “First Times” that I have experienced here gave me more novelties than I ever had before leaving home. And there are also so many difficulties that I have faced that make me tough and ready to be an independent person!

Firstly, like most of overseas students, I think the most important task is using a foreign language to converse. At first, I was very brave and eager to try to talk with locals. But things are not so easy, most of them feel that they can not understand what I am saying. At last, I feel sad and disappointed that we, foreign students, have to talk with each other in Chinese .But I haven’t lost my confidence. I know that it will take a long time for me to be familiar with the new environment and there are a mass of things, including the culture, English, local knowledge and so on, waiting me to learn humbly.

Different from my life at home, I have to take good care of myself, not only in studies, but also our everyday life. I think I am an independent person so I do not experience too much difficulty in adapting to the new life-style. I always wash my clothes with hands, and can even sew up buttons and holes in my clothes. Without my mother’s call in the morning, I have to open my sleepy eyes and wake up. Without the support of my parents to hold, I have to discover the unknown domain and novelties on my own. All my behaviors depend on me. So I learnt how to control my life and how to be the master of time.

As a student, my responsibility is to study. But there are many differences between my learning experiences here and in China. I have to learn how to cooperate with my classmates. It is very important in my education in Singapore. Also I should develop my leadership during the study in Temasek Junior College by participating in extra-curricular activities. In general, I should adjust the balance between the study and life.

I have this experience that everyone will have after leaving home - “homesickness”. I always miss my homeland, my parents, my relatives, my friends. I missed all the things in my hometown. But I know that I have to be realistic. I can also find some of the products here. I try to make myself busy so that I can put my homesick yearning at the back of my mind. I find that it really effective.

Riding on my parents’ efforts and hopes, I try to enjoy myself every day so that they will not be worried about me. I will also prove my worth as the time goes by, develop myself and make my dreams come true.

I have a very good friend whose name is Gujian. We have known each for more than 10 years. We knew each other in primary school. He is my best friend form the 10 years we know each other. He is very dear to me as my brother. He is not very tall, but he is strong and clever that he always could get a higher scores than the rest in our class.

When we were in our primary school, we had a maths competition and the students who wanted to participate in the competition would be trained together by our teacher. It is a chance for us two to work together as a group. And it was good for our friendship also. It is a good start of our friendship. Sometimes we would met some maths problem that could not be solved so easily, so we needed to discuss it together. During the discussions, we realized that we should be good partner for each other, although we are very different people with different personality. For a example, I would usually like to make the solution of the maths problems easier, but for the same problems he would present the solution more correctly even excellently. So the maths problems which was in our hands would be solved fast, easily and correctly. We are also good partner in sport games and computer games(but I am much better than him in badminton). Because we know each other so well, we know what each other is thinking by the tiny actions from the other one. We are also good compertitioner for each other. We can make each other work harder as the whips for the horses.

Now we are studying in different country. I am studying in Singapore, When he was still a good student in China. But we always contact each other by MSN. I hope I can keep the friendship with all of my good friends forever. Because thay are all very important in the 17 years of my life.

I have a very good friend in China. His name is Yunan. We studied in the same primary school, in the same class. But after we graduated, we went to different middle schools. Although we could not see each other everyday, we still very close. Once we had time during the weekend, we would go outside to play games together.

Yunan is a cool guy, he is tall and skinny. His eyes are very big. He is very smart, and he was very good at a lot of computer games. He has a quick mind , so he was good at maths.

It is very good that we are close friends. But there were some bad effects because of it. We spent too time playing that we left our homework undone. Our parents often complained about it. They always didn’t allow us to go outside and play together. But we still did.

We were very happy we two could play computer games together. Once either one of us met any difficulties, the other one would give him a hand. But our studies were getting worse and worse. He was an excellent student, but I knew he sometimes failed his exams, I regretted what I had done. However, the things have already happened, both of us are not too bad today. We are looking forward to the future.

Now, we live in different countries, and our lives are extremely different as well. But we are still quite good friends, we still have the same hobbies, the same tastes and the same characters. And the friendship between us will exist forever.

If you ask me who is the most important person in my life, my answer will be my mother. This is not only because she is the one gave my life and takes care of me all the time, but also because she is the one always standing behind me and support me.

My mother is not a very pretty woman, she has dark skin, and her eyes are as big as small peach kernel. She is 1.6 meter tall and she has some small spots in her face. But in my eyes, she is definitely very pretty.

My mother is an accountant, and she is 47 years old now. She divorced my father when I was about seven. So she had to earn money and did house work all by her self. My mother puts my interests on her high priority. She knew that I am fond of singing Peking Opera, so she found a good teacher for me and went with me to the teacher’s home every Tuesday during my primary school period.

Once I was ill and I will vomit everything I have eaten. At first my mother took me to the children hospital to see a doctor. But the medicine that did not work, instead, I also vomited the medicine. So my mother spend all night took care of me and cook some food which is easy to digest for me. Since this did not work, she brought some Chinese medicines which are very expensive for me. And I was cured at last.

There is one incident which I still remember today. Once I sang Peking Opera in a school performance I went back to my classroom happily after my performance. The girls were very happy and also showed their admiration to me. Some of the boys however did not agree because they thought the Peking Opera was out-dated. I was very upset and angry when I went back home and told my mother.

“There is nothing wrong with you.” She said, “They did not value your performance because they do not really know about Peking Opera, so don’t feel upset and angry with them. You just keep on doing it, because it’s right to do what you really like.”

Don’t mind other people’s views, just do what you like and what you think is right. That’s the lesson she taught me. She always helps me to solve problem and communicates with me. We are very good friends. She also teaches me to be independent so that I can take care of myself. I really thank her for doing so many things for me. It’s her who let me be who I am today.

This is the first time I am visit a foreign city, and it is a very unforgettable experience. Singapore is such a refreshing city. Everything here is very different from my own city.

The strong, green trees standing along the road, just like the umbrellas reflecting the sun light in order to keep the city cool. Look up to the blue sky, it is like a very big piece of blue glass, clean and wide. Few rolls of clouds are floating leisurely in the sky.

Wait till the night comes. The night whole city is covered in the colorful lights. Now, the shopping area must be getting busier and busier. There are a lot of splendid shopping centers, hotels and office buildings. Through the huge glass walls of these buildings you can see people are very busy with their shopping and working and many others things.

Along the road, some of the people are queuing up in a long line to buy some appetizing food, some of them are choosing the exquisite gifts, and the others are bargaining with the salesmen.

Everyone knows that in Singapore, the shopping area is the most bustling at night. At night this area may make you feel like falling into a huge and complicated maze. It is very easy to get lost there again and again. All you ca see may be the people form different countries religions shopping everywhere. I think Singapore must be the most lively and busiest city I have ever seen!

This is my first impression of Singapore, the most enchanting and heavenly city I have ever been!

Among all the teachers that I had, she may be a very ordinary teacher, but she really left a deep impression on me. She is my first English teacher in primary school. I always address her as “Mrs. Wang”. She is tall and very fat. The first time that I met her, I thought she is very formidable. During her lessons, she often spits in the classroom, so all of us were very disgruntled about this. However, nobody dared to blame her. In addition, she always teaches very fast in her lessons. After she enters into the classroom, she only takes about ten minutes to finish a unit. Then she will stand there, and scold the students.

She often scolds the students who read English badly though they did not make any mistakes. Because of the rapid teaching of every lesson, none of us can understand the lesson. However, when she asks us question, she often says, “Too easy.”(It is only for her.) Therefore, every time when one of us answers her question wrongly, she would be very angry and scold him/her severely. After that, she always praises her favourite student who is in another class named “Wu Yu”. Because he had studied in Canada for four years, his English is very good. She often compares us with him; if we were worse, she would scold us. Therefore, we all hated her at that time. Nevertheless, one incident let me change my perception of her.

When I was in Grade 5, our school held an activity, where we choose the best student of each grade. Obviously, “Yang Yang” in our class should be the best student of our grade since he was top in every subject. However, there was strong competition between two top student. One is Yang Yang and the other is Wu Yu. Therefore, our school chose one day to let us to vote for the best student among these two. We had voted for three times, but they was a tie for all the three voting. Therefore, it was very difficult to decide. At last, our principal decided to let the teachers take part in the voting. There were five teachers, so it was impossible that their votes would be tie again. Two teachers voted for Yang Yang, and two teachers voted for Wu Yu. The key decision would made by our English teacher. All of us were very nervous at that time, because we all knew that she should vote for Wu Yu who is her favourite student of our grade. To our surprise, she voted for Yang Yang.

After that, our civics teacher asked her why she voted for Yang Yang, she said: “Because Yang Yang is really better than Wu Yu although his English study is not very well, I voted for him because I think he should be our best student.”

Many days later, when our civics teacher told it to us, all of us changed our attitude of her. In addition, because of this event, she left a deep impression on me which made me learn that people do not always behave in the manner that we expect them to be.

My mother is quite short and thin .Her long ,curly hair is dyed red. Under the pink-framed glasses are her small but clear eyes. She has a well-shaped mouth, a delicated nose sitting nicely on a heart-shaped face. Because of the old age ,when she is smiling, there will be some furrows on her face. As she is not confident about her height ,she always refuses to wear the trousers ,saying that they will make her look shorter.

Both of us have some similarities in our personalities. We both are the people who response accordingly to different situation. She is friendly and serious at different times .When she faces the person whom she is not very familiar with, my mother will give her friendliest smile to the stranger .But she never give me that kind of smile as she is strict with me. But I must admit that she is a really patient and carefully person, like a typical Chinese woman.

She likes quiet and she is a bit timid. I remember once she was reading her favourite book, when she saw a small mouse .She immediately jumped up from the bed and screamed so loudly that the poor mouse became deaf and had to run away. Except for the time she met the mouse ,her voice is usually very low and slow. It sounds like the small river is marching.

There is always some special smell with her, maybe it’s the smell of the shampoo, but I really like the smell. And my mother’s skin is cool and soft , I think if you bite it, it will be very oily and fragrant.

My mother is the person who is very dear to me that she always take good care of my health ,study and life. When I face some problems ,she will try her best to enlighten me and encourage me .And unlike other parent ,she always give me much freedom that I can do things that I like. Although sometimes we have quarrels with each other, I think she is the dearest person in the world and I like her very much.

I have been to Bedok bus interchange many times. I always get there by No. 196 and as soon as I get there, I go directly to the MRT station.

Sometimes I was so busy that I did notice the surroundings. However, when I just went for a shopping trip in the area, I had some time to look around, to explore the things of the bus interchange and get to know the local people. Therefore, I found it was interesting.

The Bedok bus interchange gives me a deep impression. It is very typical. Busy people going quickly to their destinations, buses going in and out, and many shops are full of people.

There were many kinds of people in the bus interchange: students, workers, businessman, hawker, couple, foreign tourists and so on. Some of them were young, some were old, and some were in their middle ages. They were all very busy. Some were talking on their handphone rapidly; I stared in amazement at their flapping lips as they sprayed spittle that sparkled in the sunshine. Some were reading newspaper. Their eyes scanned the news seriously. Some bought food from the shop hurriedly and it looks as if they were going to have a meeting and had no time to eat dinner. Some school boys have untidy hairstyles while others are well-combed. Some people wore gaudy T-shirts while others were very elegantly dressed.

Different sounds can be heard in the bus interchange. The sharpest noise came from the buses screeching to a shop. There are sounds from different footsteps, which include the melodious sound of women’s high heel shoes, the heavy sound of workers’ boots, the soft sound of students’ basketball shoes, and the thudding sound of the businessmen’ leather shoes. There are different tones and sounds from people’s conversations, such as worried questions, angry shouting and happy laughter.

Furthermore, I could smell a lot of scents. The strong smell of the perfume from the women wafted into my nose quickly. As well as the smell of petrol that from buses and the smell of cigarettes. When I passed the shops and the hawker center in the bus interchange, I could catch fragrance of delicious food floating in the air. The marvellous smell of steam, the smell of pork, the smell of fruits, the smell of oil and the chicken rice smell was so tempting that I couldn’t wait to taste it.

I like bus interchange because local people’s lifestyles are shown to me there. I can get to know them well by observing them. It is really an interesting thing.

It is Sunday morning where people are free from the school and work, the market is very busy.

There are many people looking for the things they would like to buy. There are many shelves in the market with all kinds of goods on it.

A woman, whose child is sitting in the big basket, is looking for milk for her baby to drink. She asks the attendant where to get it, the young attendant smiles and tells her: The things this side are all daily use, if you want to buy food, please go this path down then turn left, you will see the lift there, and go upstairs, you can see it!

Many girls are looking for the cosmetic products as they always want to be prettier. And the sales people try their best to show the goods to the girls, telling them which one is better, which one fits them.

Some ladies are looking for the article for babies, they are so cute! The babies sit in the big markets and always smile.

In the second floor, there are many counters where people go to ask for the food from the seller. The seller weighs the food and tells them how much they should pay. There is the smell of all kinds of food, such as chicken rise, roast duck, BBQ, yun tun noodles. They smell so nice!

There are many iceboxes in the crowded marker. So people feel a little cool.

There are many people in the market. It is so busy and crowded! And you can hear many kinds of voice: laughing, crying, peddling, asking questions and so on.

What such a lively scene!

She is a girl who grew up with me and left a deep impression on me. Her name is Mengwei. She is fifteen years old now. She has a round face with two small eyes, a flat nose and a thick mouth. Even though she has two small eyes, she likes to narrow her eyes because she is shortsighted, so her eyes always look like two short lines from a distance. She also likes to cover her mouth with her hands. I guess it may be because of her thick lips. She has long, black, straight, gentle and yielding hair. I like to tough her hair. The feeling is like when I am petting a dog’s fur. It is comfortable and smooth. Her voice is slow, leisurely and faint.

When we were young, I was 9 years old and she was 10 years old, we lived in Henan Province, China, to practice table tennis, away from our parents. Our school had a table tennis competition, only the coaches in our school can decide who can join the competition. We both wanted to join it. But she said she had better chances of going for the competition because she was better than me. In fact, she is older than me, so she played table tennis earlier, thus she was better. But now I practiced table tennis more diligently than her, and I can win her. Because of this, I was not convinced by her logic about her being better. Then I said that how could she was sure that she was better, and I wanted to have a competition with her to prove I was better than her. And she agreed.

Then all girls proclaimed their support for her except my best friend, Wang Qian. Mengwei and I were good friends before we came to Henan Province. I did not want to be an opponent with her, I wanted to be good friends with her like before. But I had no idea how. At last, I won. She was so angry with me that she said to other girls that she would not be a good friend with me any more, because she had a big extremely big enmity with me. I was grievous and morose but I had no idea how to stop this. She was very angry with me as if I had caused the death of her parent.

I would remember Mengwei forever as that incident left a very deep impression on both of us. Even though we are friends now, I know she will never forget the incident and the fact that she had a big enmity with me. I think it is like a scar in her heart.

My grandfather is over 70 years old. He is a tall and thin man. In my memory, he is not weak. He was able to hold me above his head by using his powerful hands when I was in primary school with one hand held my back neck and the other one kept up my waist. He gritted his teeth for a while and held me up for a long time. I grinned happily when I was in the midair.

My grandfather is not a handsome man. He has yellow and a little dark skin, small puffy eyes, thick and wide lips, but he likes to be well-dressed. It does not mean that he is rich. He is a boy from the countryside and he is very thrifty. He does not seem to have new clothes. Most of his leisure clothes which are worn at home seem old. They look like the working clothes in 1980s and the pyjamas seem to be sewn 20 years ago. But he likes to have a neat hairstyle with tidy clothes and definitely wipe his shoes shiningly before going out. He always taught me not to be wasteful with buying too many new clothes.

He does not like other elderly men who like to play chess or mah-jong every day. He never goes out to play with strangers on the bridge. He is afraid that other untidy men might have contagious diseases. He likes to read newspapers, plant vegetables and fruit trees, write calligraphy or do swordplay at home. He also likes to talk about something new published in the newspaper with me and teaches me many things necessarily to survive in the society.

There are many different kinds of vegetables and fruits in the garden, such as peppers, cucumber, greens , sponge gourd, kumquats, oranges, guava, jujube, and so on. I was able to eat fresh vegetables and fruits when I came to see him and grandma during the weekend with my parents. Grandpa’s calligraphy was quite good and he tried to teach me. When I was interested in writing, he quickly prepared everything for me by spreading the useless newspaper on the table, taking out the brush and ink and wetting the brush evenly for a while. He stood near to me while I was writing and taught me how to write patiently. Every time, I would only spend less than twenty minutes on writing. He always said nothing and then put away everything neatly. I felt sorry about him for having a student like me! Ah, there is a wooden sword and a real one at home. Grandpa often practiced the swordplay in the morning. I would practice with the wooden one and imitated his movements and made a spectacle of myself sometimes.

When I grew up, I became rebellious and liked to quarrel with him because of very small troubles or different opinions on a subject. He would look at me miserably for a while and listen to me shouting loudly! I felt very sorry to him after quarrelling. Grandpa still treated me as well as before. I knew he loved me deeply!

Nowadays in Singapore, I miss him so much. I heard the choking sobs from my grandpa through the cell phone. He is very dear to me and very important in my life. <>
